Latest Plenary Vote on EU4Health

Who can access fertility treatments in Europe?
Today, across Europe, more than 25 million citizens are affected by infertility. Infertility can be defined as the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility is much more common than most people imagine and can affect both men and women. Large population studies show that as many as one in six couples are affected at some time in their reproductive lives. -

DHE - Digital Tools for Patient Empowerment and Person-Centred Care – Workshop
On 5 & 6 October 2020, the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) hosted a two-day multi-stakeholder workshop under the framework of the DigitalHealthEurope project. The workshop brought together a breadth of participants including patient advocates, healthcare professionals, policy makers, industry, and other health stakeholders with an interest in digital tools that can empower patients and foster their collaboration with healthcare professionals. It took place over two days of plenary and breakout sessions, enabling all participants to contribute their views and shape the discussion. -

Fall Meeting 2020 – another productive meeting for the EPF Youth Group
During the second weekend of October, the EPF Youth Group held its Fall Meeting. Despite the virtual setting, it was still fun and enjoyable. More than anything this meeting gave us the opportunity to socialize as a group, and to talk through some of the challenges that that we have been facing over the past year. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted, once again, that patients should be involved in shaping health policy at national and European levels, and why their unique knowledge and expertise, collectively and individually, are vital. We believe that the EU4Health programme represents a unique opportunity to act on this, whilst enhancing European coordination to protect our health. EPF is concerned, however, that the direction Council discussions are taking currently may jeopardise this important progress. EPF sent a letter on 9 October to the Permanent representations while the voting recommendations were shared on 12 October to the Members of the European Parliament in view of the upcoming ENVI Committee vote on the EU4Health report, taking place on 12 and 13 October. -

Patients’ safety must take precedence in EU coronavirus vaccination deals
An effective vaccine will be the key to bringing the COVID-19 pandemic under control. Understandably, vaccine developers are under pressure to bring products to the market as quickly as possible, and authorities to approve them. While EPF appreciates the efforts made by industry and regulators to speed up the process, we stress that patient safety must be the highest priority. Regulatory ‘shortcuts’ must not lead to lowering the standards of safety or efficacy that should remain under the strict control of EMA. -
